Koustuv is always innovative be it for academic courses or be it for research. He has developed the whole Master Program in Health Economics at the world famous Karolinska Institutet (Provides Nobel Prize in Medicine). After that, he has developed 25 different programs and courses at PhD & Master level in the famous universities with huge national and international impact, as his achievements have demonstrated the list.

SPECIFIC RESEARCHES WITH IMMENSE IMPACT

  1. Health systems
  • Maternal and Neonatal Death Review (MNDR) system to improve Maternal and Neonatal health care services in Bangladesh Health system This is revolutionary research work. We have piloted MNDR model in two districts. It is now being implemented in the whole country. The whole health system has an immense impact of the project implementation.
  • Quality improvement system for maternal and neonatal health care at facilities in Bangladesh: implication for health systems of the low-income countries. We have an immense impact of this research, as the health care utilization has improved significantly. The health systems have moved towards its target.
  • Assessing the Palestinian Health Care Sector for Chronic Disease and War Injuries Management – An Explorative Study for developing better health systems. We have big support from The Lancet. We are re-developing the Palestinian health systems through appropriate research and policy advocacy.
  • Prevention of Childhood Blindness in Bangladesh: Developing a health systems framework for low- and middle-income countries. This is a big problem in those countries. The health systems framework would provide big support for health service utilization targeting a huge save of human capitals.
  • Healthcare utilization is an important issue for health systems research. I have categorically identified the gaps in health systems for maternal and child health and for self-care seeking.
  • Setting priorities in health: a study of the fairness and legitimacy of the budgetary process in the Tanzanian health systems. This is, by the way, one of the first studies in its kind where the low- and middle-income countries will get a guideline for their health systems for fairness and better utilization.

  • Cost model – received ‘The Best Scientific Award’ World Injury Conference by the WHO
  • Socio-economic neighborhood disadvantage index – a model developed for further assessing the inequity within the poorest group for better healthcare distribution.
  • Fairness: How health care services are fairly distributed and accessed. This research has huge importance for policy making and for better health capital provision.
  • Evaluating health research investment: Every invests on health research. We have evaluated how society has been returned back by health research in terms of economic evaluation. This research has a tremendous impact on policy making and health research financing.
  • Cost-effectiveness analysis of community-based initiatives on children safety: All countries are now investing for child safety. We have explored its cost-effectiveness for a transparent and better policy making.
  • Measuring Health of general medicine nurses’ who work under huge job-pressure and multi-cultural condition: This research has a big impact on hospital management and policy makers decision making towards better health services.
  • Cost of Injury -presented to Senior WHO staff & other renowned dignitaries Invited by WHO VIP: This research has worldwide impact, as the policy makers have recognized that injury is a big problem. Also, this research has put me in the special invitee scientists group in Geneva.
  • Health financing model for developing sustainable Safe Community (a participatory community based intervention): This health financing model has helped many policy makers to provide better financial support to the communities. The model is now being implemented in several countries. The workshops are very popular for the policy makers (more than 40 countries).

  1. Injury Prevention & Safety Promotion (IPSP) behavior modification through Community-based participatory approach
  • Road Traffic injury prevention: Estimating the burden and providing evidence-based interventions, our research has a big impact on it. (in several countries)
  • Violence prevention: Our research has an impact for the WHO to convince all the Health Ministers to recognize Violence as a public health problem. We are the persons behind the World Health Assembly to accept violence as a public health problem. I personally believe that our research has the best impact so far.
  • Spinal cord injury prevention: This is a very big problem in every country. Our research is trying to provide a preventive framework, incorporating relevant health systems variables. The model should be the first one for the low- and middle-income countries.
  • Drowning prevention: Our evidence is now a big role model for drowning prevention, with media coverage and unbelievable support from the communities.
  • Burn prevention: We have several researches on burn prevention in Asia. Now African colleagues are intending to implement our projects in Africa.
  • Animal-snake bites prevention: We have some pioneering research on this issue.
  • Suicide prevention: Community based suicide prevention model is our another success.
  1. Health Promotion (focusing behavioral approach)
  • Children of Alcoholics -this was a very popular and media covered intervention for the betterment of the children of alcoholic families. Also the first time we have measured the health status of the children of alcoholics which is very poor. The findings have insisted the policy makers for allocating necessary resources for this poor group of children.
  • Leisure arena for alcohol narcotics drugs and tobacco (ANDT) prevention – a study on adolescent health and leisure activities: this research has a huge social and academic impact with policy implications.
  • Research on alcoholics: Another success story, how the alcoholic persons are self-reporting and getting support to become abstainer. The research is famous in Sweden and now being implemented in other countries.

  • On behalf of the WHO CCCSP /ISCCC I have regularly visited or meet policy makers and advocated for incorporating health and safety promotion.
  • Safe Hospital program for health and safety promotion in hospitals.
